Spread the word – antibiotics won’t get rid of your cold or flu

March 10, 2009

Today is European Antibiotic Awareness Day. You, learned reader, almost certainly know that antibiotics are completely ineffective for infections caused by viruses such as the common cold or flu.
You know too, that antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections. It would be insulting your intelligence to assume ignorance of the fact that antibiotics do not prevent viruses from spreading to other persons.
And you are well aware that misuse of antibiotics only causes bacteria to become resistant to antibiotic treatments, so when you need antibiotics in the future they may no longer work.
Being such a well-informed person you probably don’t need reminding that not everyone does know these facts, but we all have busy brains and busy days and we can’t share all the useful knowledge we’ve sucked up. So, why not use European Antibiotic Awareness Day as an excuse to spread the good word?
If you have a lovely colour printer, you can download and print off some nice posters to help make the point…
