Update: When men are weak, women will suffer
Good news! From The Week (11/4/09): “Rape” law dropped: A Taliban-style law that would have forced Afghan women to have sex with their husbands at least every four days, unless they were ill, and to ask their husbands’ permission to leave the house, has been shelved. The law, which would have applied to Afghanistan’s Shia communities (about 15% of the population) was drafted by the government of President Hamid Karzai as a way to win support from hardline clerics and was not debated when it was passed by parliament last month. But after sections of the law were leaked to the Western media, they provoked an outcry from human rights organisations and foreign leaders, who pointed out that it contravened section 22 of Afghanistan’s own constitution, under which men and women are equal before the law.
