Top up your hope reserves
Another day, another braille digest magazine. Today it’s Contention, our political comment magazine. Wading through the bulging tray of broadsheet comment, I came across a news story that refuelled my depleted hope reserves: Former West Bank enemies find peace the Ulster way (The Times, 20th April 2009). It’s a story of how Martin McGuinness is giving lessons in negotiation to Combatants For Peace, a Palestinian-Israeli group, and well worth reading.
It’s heartening to know that at least some bridges are being built, that there is hope in some Palestinian hears and compassion in some Israeli ones (you want to believe these things, but the news coming out of the Middle East can make it hard to hold on to positive thoughts sometimes).
I love the thought that would-be suicide bomber Shifa Alqudsi is alive today to kiss her seven-year-old daughter goodnight. I want to throw my arms around Chen Alon, the reservist major who has served a prison sentence for refusing to enter the occupied territories and inspired hundreds of others to do the same.
I want to shout about this from the rooftops – I hope you will want to too. Spread the word and top up someone else’s hope reserves today.
