Celebrating the contribution of refugees

June 17, 2009

This week (15-21 June) is Refugee Week and The Independent on Sunday rounded up some famous faces to illustrate small gestures we can all use to make newcomers welcome.
Juliet Stevenson was reading a Nigerian story to children at the UK’s first centre for refugee children, Tony Benn had tea with a lawyer who fled the DRC, chef Fergus Henderson learned to cook Eritrean dishes, Michael Palin learned a few words from Somali refugee Musa and Mark Thomas took part in a picture protest with a Zimbabwean refugee.
You can learn more about the Simple Acts campaign at the Refugee Week website.
It would be foolish of me to promise to carry out all the simple acts suggested, but I’ll get as many as I can completed and try to remember to report back here. Today I will be making sure I smile at strangers…
Feel free to shame me btw, by reporting your own completed simple acts as a comment!
