Does a fairtrade KitKat make up for Nestle’s other sins?

December 9, 2009

I’m all for Fairtrade – though it will be better still when the term is an anachronism of course – but I’m far from convinced that making KitKat’s Fairtrade is a good enough reason to let Nestle off the hook for its behaviour on the baby milk front. Naughty toes indeed.

Nestle, of course, says it’s all good toes now, and points at its pledges on Fairtrade and sustainable palm oil. But Baby Milk Action says that Nestle was still misleading mothers in July of this year, and it seems that there are also issues of child slavery  in the production of Nestle chocolate…

You’ll have to weigh the evidence for yourself and make up your own mind, but for me KitKats remain verboten – along with the everything else on the boycott list…
